Traveling is an activity that is enjoyed by tens of millions of people all over the world and all year round. And while there are many tourist-friendly destinations, in Europe, Australia, Southeast Asia, Canada and the United States that have much to offer in terms of attractions, activities, hotels and dining options, there are still places, where there is always a threatening risk – risk of getting robbed, kidnapped, caught in a tourism scam, or be at the wrong place at the wrong time. To avoid visiting such places in today’s somehow dangerous world, TravelVivi.com has chosen 5 destinations, excluding those that are more or less obvious, where there are currently (17 October, 2012) military conflicts or are terrorist hotspots (Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Lybia, Somalia and others) or are so much politically isolated like North Korea, Belarus, Iran, Myanmar/Burma, that your risk is absolutely unjustified. Read on to get acquainted with the countries we consider you should remove from your lists, simply avoid visiting such destinations or exercise extreme caution and know what to expect! Article is not politically motivated and is just Travelvivi’s opinion. Feel free to leave your comments agreeing and disagreeing, adding your thoughts on this.
Papua New Guinea
A developing country in the southwest Pacific, Papua New Guinea (PNG) is one of the most exotic, beautiful and still unspoiled countries in Asia that has much on offer, from great scuba diving amid the coral reefs to amazing wildlife sanctuaries that are home to multitudes of colorful birds and the world’s largest butterflies, to a range of interesting sites waiting to be explored and experience. At the same time, PNG is a country, where violent crime is a serious threat in many areas.
There are several reasons that contribute to crime in PNG and one of them is particularly the fact that the country, although politically one nation, is made up of more than eight hundred separate societies with unique languages. There is absence of traditional village social control and growing social strains when residents of formerly isolated communities come into contact with each other. Another significant contributor to crime is the country’s incomplete and halting transition from a subsistence agriculture economy to one offering a broader range of jobs. And the least but not last fact why crime is so popular in PNG is that it does not have a tradition of strong local police authorities.
In recent years numerous U.S. citizen residents and visitors have been victims of violent crime, suffering even from severe injuries. Robbery, rape, carjacking, armed robberies and stoning of vehicles are some of the types of crime available in and around major cities of PNG, including Port Moresby, Lae, Mount Hagen and Goroka, while it’s also dangerous to travel in isolated rural areas, as well as visit such unguarded public sites, as parks, golf courses, beaches, or cemeteries.
However, in case you decide to visit PNG, the only good way to enjoy the country’s pleasures avoiding street crime is to take advantage of organized tours run by reliable and experienced operators.
Haiti
Many say Haiti is one of Caribbean’s best-kept secrets, with stunning natural beauty, magnificent architectural attractions and rich culture and history. However, the U.S. State Department, along with a number of other countries considers Haiti unsafe for tourists, as there is a high level of criminal activity and violence throughout the country that includes small but growing risk of kidnapping. This is mainly because Haiti has been plagued by political violence for most of its history and is one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere.
The violent crime prevails especially in the capital city of Port-au-Prince, which though offering some fabulous beaches and a number of good sights, is not recommended to visit. However, in case you decide to travel to Haiti, make sure to register on their Web site, avoid wearing jewelry, travel in pairs or small groups, as well as stay away from shantytowns like Cite Soleil, La Saline and Bel Air and Martissant, where gang activity, carjacking and theft are common.
Azerbaijan
Located in the Caucasus of southeastern Europe and sharing borders with Georgia, Turkey, Armenia, Iran, Caspian Sea coastline and Russia, Azerbaijan formed as a nation and country in the beginning of 20th century. It is known as the ‘Land of Fires’ and is in the list of 5 dangerous places tourists avoid visiting; and not for nothing. Though blessed with spectacularly beautiful nature and a wealth of attractions, including a great many UNESCO World Heritage Sites, which azeris claim to be their heritage, Azerbaijan, rich with oil and gas, still remains one of those countries, where there are concerns regarding freedom of expression and freedom of the media, as well as worries of being mugged or robbed, attacked or being insulted, and be a subject to a physical attack because of your skin color, ethnic origin or religion. Azerbaijan recently came into light of international media after releasing, pardoning and giving a national hero status to a convicted axe murderer Ramil Safarov.
This is maybe a result of the country’s history that has seen many wars, conquers and events, which have undoubtedly left a mark in both the character of locals and the atmosphere of the country.
Azerbaijan has seen a downward trend in the number of crimes committed against foreigners. Foreigners are at a great risk in areas attracting large crowds or in every isolated area. There have been several reports from individuals who have been victims of crimes occurring late at night in bars frequented by Westerners. There have also been reports from a number of women complaining of unwanted male attention, including groping and other offensive behavior, as well as reports of vehicle break-ins at regional tourist sites and more, much more.
If you ever happen to visit Azerbaijan, be sure to follow the following tips: do not walk alone at night in dark and unlit streets; try to arrange to be picked up or dropped off as close to your hotel as possible by a taxi accredited to the hotel you are staying in, and avoid showing large sums of money in public or taking your valuables with you.
Egypt
Unlike the above mentioned destinations, Egypt is popular travel hotspot among tourists, as it’s home to such renowned ancient sites, as the Pyramids of Giza, the Temples of Luxor and Abu Simbel, the town of Aswan and Alexandria – Egypt’s ‘second city’ to name but a few, as well as never-ending activities that include everything from fantastic scuba diving in the Red Sea and snorkeling in Sharm el-Sheik, to superb golfing and River Nile cruising.
However, when traveling to Egypt, you should avoid certain areas, where there is a high crime rate. These are particularly sites found in the center of Nile Valley, including Minya, Asyut and Sohag, which though unfortunately boasting some of the most beautiful monuments in Egypt (the beautiful tombs at Beni Hassan in Minya, the majestic monasteries of Asyut and the Temple of Abydos in Sohag), have been the place where certain incidents occurred during the 80s-90s against targeting the tourist industry.
Well-worth avoiding is also the visit to the North Sinai area, where, in recent years, a significant increase in criminal activities has been noticed. The security situation outside of the resort areas in the Governorate of South Sinai has also deteriorated since early 2012, and there have been a number of hijacks and kidnaps in the interior of the Governorate. There have been reports of serious sexual assaults on women, as well as a number of arrests during demonstrations, including British and other foreign nationals.
Laos
There are many things that make Laos a must-visit for many tourists traveling through Southeast Asia, usually en route to or from Cambodia, Thailand or Vietnam. They include: Lao’s World Heritage City of Luang Prabang, Si Phan Don or the ‘Four Thousand Islands’ and the Pha That Luang, add to this the myriad of adventure, from caving to visiting Hill Tribes to river tubing.
Crime scene in Laos is low at first sight, but this does not mean that you should not exercise caution and monitor developments that might affect your safety in this getaway. Crime committed against tourists is very often non-confrontational in nature and primarily consists of purse snatching, thefts, pick pocketing, and unattended property (purses, shopping bags, passport, etc.). There have been incidents where tourists have had their drinks or food drugged, which has lead to the victim being assaulted. So, make sure to never leave your food or drink out of sight.
When in Laos, be also careful when undertaking water-based activities, I mean choose reliable tour operators to organize your activity, as incidents of drowning and serious injuries have been reported.
what a biases and horrible article towards Azerbaijan! I lived there 10 years! people are super friendly and country is amazing! The author either did not do homework or have an agenda against Azerbaijan.
this country is not dangerous as you think. Eurovison Contest 2012 took place in this country. so you saw how beautiful and amazing this country is. And also people are very kind and normal.
So keep your thoughts for yourself. if you want to see these beautiful places come and see.
of course except armenians. you will never see this places again. 😉
Sure! Same for the azeri: the will never see Karabakh again 😉
Dear author, I’ve traveled to 3 of the countries you listed here and I have to agree with conclusions on Egypt and partially on Laos. Egypt is really dangerous out of the resort area. Only experienced tourists should dare to visit your mentioned places alone (especially if you are a girl or are with a girl).
Regarding Laos. You probably are right, but it’s just because country is very poor, but people are very nice in general and I had no problem. No extra caution or whatever when in Laos.
Azerbaijan probably is in the list because of that murderer case. My experience is that people are nice, only for entry visa I had to explain why i visited Armenia (duh – I visited 3 South Caucasus countries) , and they looked at me very suspiciously. A usual developing eastern country, only too much hate toward neighbor nations. Verdiyeva just proves the case.
Can’t say anything about Haiti and PNG….
OMG!!! It’s unbelievable that Azerbaijan was mentioned in such article)) Is it joke? All the time I think Why there are so many foreigners in Baku…and now I understood – because it is very dangerous country)))
p.s. sorry my english
I have visited both Azerbaijan and Egypt (albeit Egypt pre-revolution) and never felt unsafe in either. Many of the “tips” you list are basic common sense when visiting any place in the world – not flashing cash and not walking on dark, unlit streets late at night. You shouldn’t do that anywhere.
The people I met in Azerbaijan were wonderful – incredibly friendly and helpful. And I visited Beni Hassan and Minya in Egypt and felt completely safe – I don’t think it’s fair to label an area as dangerous due to incidents that happened 20+ years ago. In fact, the whole area has a significant police presence now, greatly lowering the risk of tourists being targeted and giving an added sense of security.
I love how its only the Azeris under fake names who pretend to be westerners and try to defend their “country” NO other race has commented because they are civilized enough to accept their negatives. Of course Azerbaijan is dangerous, just because euro vision was hosted there does not mean its safe what kind of logic is that? Any country that makes a hero out of an axe murderer is dangerous because it proves how uncultured and uncivilized its people are. Anytime you combine Islam with an uncultured people you get dangerous monsters. Look up all the other uncivilized muslim countries, they all share one thing, their thirst for blood. And so Azerbaijan is deffinitely a no no!… And your comments about Armenians not beig able to visit already proves how racist and intolerant your people are, no thanks I had rather spend my money and visit a Christian country that doesn’t lie about its history.
Matilda,
How can be sure that the people write under fake names? Is this because you use one?
What kind of country are you from?? Don’t be shy, tell your true identity,
Not only Euro, Azerbaijan used to host a lot of events during last several and no one was left unhappy.
Moreover, Azerbaijan is safest place, at least, in South Caucasus.
Those criminals, crooks and “uncultured” people you can easily find in Armenia, or on occupied regions of
Azerbaijan, which are indeed extremely dangerous to visit because they are under control by criminals and gangsters. There is no decent people left in that region of Azerbaijan, after the local Azeris were brutally expelled.
The rest of Azerbaijan, “Muslim” part, if you want, is traditionally well educated, hospitable and pleasure to be with. Armenians are not allowed, since these people do not understand one simple think – do no litter when
you live, otherwise expect consequences.
Think about one simple thing: Azerbaijan is full of foreigners and they feel safe and happy there. Azerbaijan is a country where many nationalities and ethnic groups live in accord for centuries and still live there!
Armenians must blame only themselves and no one else that they are not welcome oi this magnificent country.
For someone who make such racists and simply stupid remarks about Islam like you – you ether are a retarded person or a psychopath who should institutionalized.
Matilda what if your country was attacked by the other one? Would you accept the occupants in your country after what they did to your nation? Armenians killed our civilians, they killed unarmed people, children during the war. Even after ceasefire they killed the child by sniper fire. What do you know about armenians and Azerbaijan, about brutality that armenians did and still continue in our occupied lands. There are more than 30000 armenians living in Baku. If we were racists as you say or wild people we would kill them all as armenians did. Now just think about who is dangerous. And SOBIESKI, you armenian bastard, in which language you call Karabagh? In Azeri language. Why, because it’s Azerbaijani land, and believe me you will not see those days when our flag will be hoisted in Karabakh and even in Irevan. Believe me and pray to God to take your soul before those days come, because in other case you will be begging to our soldiers. Whatever you say, everybody knows how safe and beautiful Azerbaijan is.
@lobogris
30000 C’mon don’t be kidding me, maybe you mean 30000 dead Armenians as I’m pretty sure that Armenian can’t survive in Baku even a single day. My friend ( from Tokyo and 100% Japanese ), have surname Miuko Yan , told me what problems he had faced in Baku just because of his Surname.
I’m Armenian and I can tell only one thing – your brains are being washed every day , but you can’t realize it and giving a axe murderer a status of hero is another excellent proof that my point is correct. I know there is also a media war thats why you know only 1 truth and we opposite of yours.
I know one day will come that media war will be over , as the real one will start , it’s just matter of time. Just it’s not clear for me who’ll benefit from that war ( one thing is clear for me neither Azerbaijan nor Armenia will gain anything expect death of our soldiers)
P.S. very funny statement “because in other case you will be begging to our soldiers ” , this is another proof that you have not matured enough to start a normal discussion ( and also have very bad memory about previous war ). if you were so powerful why you were not able to hold Karabagh , in times that we did not have even a regular army ?
Завидно! Дальше будет еще хуже. Азербайджан поднимется еще выше.
«Ай, Моська! знать она сильна,
Что лает на Слона!»
It is strange to see Azerbaijan on this list.
Dou you know how many foreigners are living in Azerbaijan in permanent base last 19 years? Dou you know that all restaurants and pubs in down town are full of expats every night?Even if information to this site was entered by somebody who personally don’t like Azerbaijan , at last management of this site shall just surf on google before making such of publication innttourist site , as otherwise nobody will trust to your other investigataion or publication here.
Azerbaijan with capital city Baku is oil rich country and oil industry which is main part of economy is ruling by International oil companies with operation of BP. How do they live in such of dangerous contry just in same buiding as locals ,are working together with them , make a families with them, eating in same restaurant ans walking in same streets.
Well, i think this article was prepared by someone Armenian, who has a strong bias towards Azerbaijan. When I was in Armenia, Armenians were telling me not to visit Azerbaijan but i traveled to Azerbaijan too. Unlike Armenia there are many tourists in Azerbaijan, they feel quite safe there. But people of Azerbaijan don’t like Armenians only because they think Armenians have occupied Azerbaijan’s territories. I don’t know whether it is true or wrong, but anyway I think this country doesn’t deserve to be in this list.
I’m also very surprised by the comments of Armenians, i guess this website is connected to Armenians by some ways.
I’ve been to Azerbaijan (Baku) on business and will never travel there again, very corrupt and dangerous, I got mugged at gun point 2 time in 9 days.
Azerbaijan very beautiful
Ron Danea, you are a liar and a scoundrel!
Rating lying. Azerbaijan is the security to the country. I traveled there. Baku beautiful city, see the youtube
all written about AZerbaijan is false.. you just have to go into the city center and see the crowds of people from around the world..
This article is written by people who do not like Azerbaijan for whatever their reasons.
Sorry for my bad english.
