Hotels are always a difficult choice. They all seem so nice, so comfortable, the only criterion that remains permanently unpleasant is the price. Anyway, if you have any other criteria, say how romantic the hotel is, take a look at our suggestion.
Casa Balthazar or the Balthazar Guesthouse is one of the cutest places you can find in the city. It’s located in the center, more specifically in Chiado.
Just like Lisbon’s history, the hotel has a unique story. This house used to belong to a man named Balthazar, who was a magnificent producer of pastry. The factory where delicious cookies were produced is now the restaurant. Hence, the name and the atmosphere of the interior. The exterior is all in white, which looks great both in daylight and at night.
Unfortunately, there are only 9 rooms, so hurry up, it’s the high season now. Every single room has a different view. So, if this feature is very important for you, check out all the rooms before choosing one.
It’s not rich with amenities, the rooms are soundproof (in case you are as cheerful as the Portuguese), there is a pool, open-air section of the restaurant, garden, and so on. The hotel also provides free WiFi for its guests. Breakfast is included in the room price, you can even order it to your room, enjoy your own panorama and soft bed. However, if the weather is nice, go to the terrace and taste Portuguese cuisine there. There is also a bar, but I would recommend you visit the bars in Alfama, they offer incredible Fado tunes. Try one per day, they are very tourist-friendly. The hotel provides vouchers to Confeitaria Nacional, the founder of which was Balthazar himself, and Buenos Aires restaurant.
There are also three living rooms, where you can spend your free time (let’s hope you don’t have any though). Those, who travel by or rent a car, can use their parking space for free. If you need other kind of transportation, ask the reception for help and tips.
The rooms are spacious, beds are, as a rule, huge. There is no outside noise, just peaceful nature and hospitality. If you’re an active person, big hotels might be a win for you, but vacation, which basically means rest, requires serenity.
Location is one of the best advantages. It’s a great start for sightseeing. Key attractions are very close, although you’ll still have to take public transport to see a few. Don’t take a cab, seriously, take the transport. Lisbon focuses a great deal on their transport history, they even have a museum on that topic.
Budget travelers should plan their stay here carefully. It’s not luxurious, but it’s not cheap as well. One thing is for sure, the staff is so kind and friendly, they will help you with everything, just ask. And you can ask in English, Portuguese is not obligatory. In a word, they have managed to create a home for travelers, a real home you won’t want to leave.
