Bansko
Best suited for beginners and intermediate skiers, the Bansko resort is located at the foot of the picturesque Pirin Mountains in southwest Bulgaria. Often credited as being ‘Bulgaria’s number one ski resort’, Bansko was recently renovated and upgraded as part of a multi-million Euros investment in a brand new skiing area. Also famous for having the best snow report and the longest ski season, this runs from December to May, of all the Bulgarian ski resorts. Besides skiing, the town of Bansko also contains various shops, bars and restaurants, as well as possessing a number of historical and cultural sites, including the remains of ancient buildings at the Staroto Gradishte site.
Borovets
Established in 1896, this the Borovets ski resort is Bulgaria’s oldest and biggest ski resort, and is located in the pine forests of the conterminous Borovets col and the slopes of the Mousala ridge on the Rila Mountain. Now credited as being one of the most modern resorts in the country, Borovets has twice hosted the World Cup Alpine Skiing rounds. Considered to have a mild winter, but boasting with a heavy snowfall, Borovets in known to have snow cover on its slopes from around mid-December to April. Easily accessible to travellers, and beginner friendly, and renowned for its good value, the town of Borovets also offers visitors the chance to experience the town’s eclectic and lively nightlife, whilst sampling the locals’ very exotic traditions.
Pamporovo
A modern ski resort set in the very heart of the Snezhanka Mountain in the Smolyan Province; Pamporovo has a reputation as the sunniest mountain resort in Bulgaria. Benefiting from a relatively mild winter compared to some of the other ski resorts in Bulgaria, with over 100 days of sunshine on average, a ski holiday in Pamporovo is suitable for both novice and established skiers, as the mountain’s rounded slopes and summits provide easier terrain for less experienced skier, while more challenging pistes, such as the Giant Slalom run and the steep mogulled wall, provides ski experts with a more thrilling exercise.
