Adults only holidays are quite a divisive topic. Ask anyone what they think and they usually come up with one of two answers. Either it’s a fantastic idea for people who want a peaceful, relaxing getaway with nothing (or rather, no kids) to get in the way of your time in the sun, or, it’s a bit weird to book into a hotel specifically to get away from children… Adults only hotels can be fantastic sanctuaries from noise or they can be full of snooty couples who hate kids. Here, let’s take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of going to an adults only hotel. It might just surprise you.
The pros…
In a nutshell, the main advantage of staying in a hotel or resort exclusively for adults is that there are no children about. Yes, it can be nice to see kids enjoying their holiday, but they tend to make a lot of noise, something that you can completely avoid in an adults only complex. So aside from the absence of crying, screaming, shouting mess-making machines, or children as we call them, what else is good about these hotels?
- Exclusivity: In an adults only hotel, the staff know you are there for some relaxation, tranquility and privacy, otherwise, why else would you have booked in? So, in general, this type of resort is quieter, slightly more upmarket and a bit more exclusive.
- Surroundings: The location of such hotels is generally more favorable too. Places like Punta Canaresorts in the Dominican Republic, which I’ve stayed at as an example, is set in really quite enviable location. More effort is put into making these hotels really beautiful places to be for couples looking to escape it all, so don’t discount this advantage.
- Quality: Hotels that only cater to adults don’t have to worry about surfaces that you can easily wipe various fluids off that babies churn out, they don’t have to have high-chairs, nappy stations and bottle warmers at every corner, so in general, the quality of furniture, facilities and amenities is slightly higher and targeted specifically at adults.
- Some adult only hotels even offer special discounts or arrangements for single people, looking to travel alone and maybe meet that special someone. It’s a novel idea, but it seems to work for some people. Where better to meet your future partner than in paradise or on the beach? Maybe I’ll give it a go…
The cons….
Now we come to the downside. Of course, both the pros and cons mentioned here are completely subjective and you might see things in a completely different way, but, in my personal experience, these are the things that let them down:
- Silence: Say what you will about finding peace on holiday, sometimes it’s just too quiet! A secluded, peaceful resort is all well and good, but sometimes you want to hear the laughter and splashing about of kids enjoying their holiday, don’t we?
- Clientele: This is a difficult one, since hotel guests vary from day to day, but I’ve always found people who book into adult only hotels are just a little… snooty, perhaps?
