With the dark winter nights getting even more bitter and unforgiving with every passing day many Brits are already looking past the festive season and into the New Year and their next holiday. A quarter of Brits (25 per cent) have said they would much rather receive holiday tickets under the Christmas tree this year than bestselling electrical items such as a kindle or ipad 2.
The survey, conducted by Travel Supermarket found that a New Year break is now the second most popular choice of present amongst 2,500 respondents.
After another year of gloomy, doom laden headlines of economic uncertainty dominating the news agenda, many households have felt compelled to watch their pennies and tighten their belts. Therefore it comes as no surprise that 32 per cent hoped to receive shopping vouchers or cold hard cash in their Christmas stocking this year.
While electrical goods have fallen slightly out of favour, other festive favourites such as the much loved Christmas jumper or pair of seasonal socks have also lost their appeal with only six per cent listing clothes as their number one present, while a measly five per cent are hoping for jewellery.
The gift of a holiday in 2012 proves to be an obviously alluring present. Bob Atkinson travel expert from TravelSupermarket advises: “The prospect of spending time with friends or loved ones, experiencing something new and also having something to look forward to is, without a doubt, very appealing”
It also appears that a few holiday themed presents can make up a complete set of gifts for those hard to buy for loved ones. Atkinson continued “With a little planning and buying say, a guide book or a small gift that relates to the destination, you can easily make up something to open on the big day that will be well received.”
Research is the key to a successful holiday gift that doesn’t break the bank. “Make sure you give yourself enough time to research the destination and to shop around for the best price for your trip.” said Atkinson. “Use the internet to find the best bargains and look out for promotions as we head towards the busiest booking period.”
