Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia
Mother Nature has blessed Bolivia with an array of amazing landscapes from moon-like deserts to the colorful windswept plains, breathtaking lakes and lagoons, picturesque jungles and lush forests that for centuries have dazzled nature lovers from all over the world. The awe-inspiring Salar de Uyuni is no exception. Located in the Potosi and Oruro departments in southwest Bolivia, the truly striking Salar de Uyuni or Salar de Tunupa is the world’s largest salt flat at 4,086 square miles and at 3,650 meters above sea level, which was formed as a result of transformations between several prehistoric lakes. Many come to experience this genuine treasure, the unusually flat and reflective salt crust of which gives visitors the illusion they are walking on clouds.
The Dark Hedges, Ireland
One of the most photographed natural phenomena in Northern Ireland and a popular attraction for tourists from around the world, the picturesque Dark Hedges is a beautiful avenue of beech trees planted by the Stuart family in the 18th century, which over the past 300 years or so, have been guarding either side of the lane, reaching up and across each other to create a truly majestic sight. The legend goes that a supernatural ‘Grey Lady’ haunts the thin ribbon of road that winds beneath the ancient beech trees. Some say the specter is the ghost of a maid from nearby house who died in mysterious circumstances centuries ago. Spectacular in every season and from every angle, the Dark Hedges is a place that is worth a visit in your lifetime.
Uluru, Australia
Housed in the stunning Kata Tjuta National Park, Uluru (previously called Ayers Rock) is one of Australia’s most recognizable natural icons, a world-famous sandstone formation standing 348 m high above sea level and measuring 9.4 km in circumstance. Rising from seemingly nowhere in the deep center of Australia, Uluru features exclusive Aboriginal rock art sites that can be viewed on guided walks an tours around the base. An interesting feature of Uluru is that it appears to change its color as the sunlight strikes it at different times of the day and year. Uluru is especially spectacular at sunrise or sunset.
Tianzi Mountains, China
Norther part of Wulingyuan Scenic Area in Hunan Province of China boasts a scenic spot, Tianzi (Son of Heaven) Mountain Nature Reserve, with amazing dense hoodoos rising one after another, with the highest peak being 1,262 m above the sea level. Tianzi Mountain, enjoying a reputation as ‘the king of all mountains,’ is a typical sandstone formation that provides striking hanging mountain scenery, one you’ve perhaps seen in the movie Avatar. It has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There is a saying that ‘those who have climbed Tianzi Mountain will not climb any other mountains,’ and ‘it cannot be said that you have been to Wulingyuan without reaching Tianzi Mountain.’
