Located in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of southeastern France, Savoy is of course known for its skiing, but this historical region has so much more to it than that. Originally part of the Duchy of Savoy, references to the region date back to the 11th century. The area also has a fascinating legacy – while it is now part of France, the name Savoy actually has its route in Latin, as the hotly contested area was originally part of Italy!
It’s not hard to see why people would fight over Savoy. It’s renowned as one of the best destinations for winter Alpine skiing, with several excellent resorts such as Meribel, La Plagne and Courchevel all just a short drive from Chambery Airport, the region’s major transport hub.
If you’re thinking of booking an Alpine getaway, you’ll want to make sure you stay in a resort that not only has fantastic skiing opportunities, but high quality rental apartments, fantastic food and better wine. Thankfully a couple of resorts in the Savoy region has all these in spades!
First up, there’s Meribel. This scenic resort may already be on your radar, as it hols the honour of having hosted the ladies skiing event in the winter Olympic games in 1992. You’ll find some of the best conditions for skiing in the Alps in Meribel, along with everything else you might need for a successful winter break. The area is well appointed with shops servicing all of your skiing needs, whether that’s buying or renting equipment, repairs or buying new boots – local ski boot store The Boot Lab is regarded as one of the best in the region.
After a long day of hitting the slopes, you’ll be able to kick back and relax with a drink in one of the areas many friendly taverns, including the Rond Point, known locally as Ronnie’s. While there are cheaper places to drink, Ronnie’s won’t be beaten on atmosphere, as the only bar with a view of the slopes.
If some members of your party aren’t fans of skiing, there’s still plenty in the area to keep them occupied. Meribel is also a hot spot for golfing enthusiasts, and adventure seekers will also enjoy the opportunities for paragliding. For a relaxing day out, head down to the Olympique Parc to enjoy an olympic-sized swimming pool, skating rink, climbing wall and a full-service spa. Sold on Meribel? This is down to the great range of slopes, from beginners pistes to advanced options for both skiers and snowboarders alike. However, there is fun to be had in La Plagne all year round: in summer, you can enjoy mountain biking or cycling, or even go hiking in Vanoise National Park. France’s first national park, it’s home to scenic and streams and a variety of wildlife. You can also visit Vallon de Champagny le Haut, to see the traditional French Alpine way of life up close in these historic hamlets. Does La Plagne sound like your dream destination?
