Everyone knows that Bermuda is one of the best touristic islands in the Caribbean, right? Except the fact that Bermuda is actually not in the Caribbean, it’s located in the Atlantic Ocean.
This, however, doesn’t mean that Bermuda has no tricks to surprise you. It’s legendary name (mainly thanks to the Triangle) has inspired so many books and movies. Now it’s time to see the mystery with your own eyes.
Just like the majority of islands in the Caribbean, the main tourist flow comes from the USA. In fact, you can reach Bermuda on a 2-hour plain flight from the nearest US airports.
The Islands
Bermuda is comprised of 181 islands, the majority of which are uninhabited. This means you can rent a boat and start your own Robinson Crusoe experience (make sure to have some means of communication though). 8 major islands, which are the main destinations for tourists, are interconnected by bridges.
Bermuda used to be a British colony (in fact, it’s the oldest one) which is why you can spot an interesting mixture in the local culture. The main flavors are British (seen mainly in the legal and educational systems, interests of the locals and social rules) and African (to be noticed in dance, music, and art).
Finally, the most famous cultural peculiarity in Bermuda is its unique business attire that includes knee length shorts. Yes, you can wear beach-style shorts to business meetings, conferences, and even if you’re elected a Premier (equal to president).
What to See
Gibbs Hill Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse (constructed in 1846) in the world built of cast iron. There are very few such lighthouses left now. Despite this, the lighthouse doesn’t have the historical look and feeling we love about all lighthouses. It’s quite modern, purely white, and not-so-interesting. However, if you have friends that love pirates, ships, and lighthouses, do visit the gift shop.
Bermuda Aquarium Museum and Zoo is one of the most affordable attractions you can visit here. It’s filled with exotic fish, turtles, and seals. The museum also houses the a gigantic living coral reef. So, if you’re afraid of diving, this could be the best place to see underwater life.
The Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity leads the list of beautiful buildings in Bermuda. The building, belonging to the Gothic Revival style, is the second version of the church, built in 1862. The first one was destroyed by fire. Climb up the stairs to witness an amazing view to the surrounding islands and sea.
Next up is the Bermuda Triangle. No, please don’t go planning a trip to the triangle and taking lots of cute photos for Instagram. The best way of watching the triangle is from afar; rent a boat and go shipwreck sightseeing. This will give you the chills and a vague idea about what it feels to enter the triangle.
The most appropriate place to learn about the triangle is the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute, which features an interesting exhibition about the greatest mystery of the world.
This was Bermuda … on your computer screen! There is another Bermuda waiting for you in the Atlantic Ocean, and the latter one is definitely much more impressive. Drop the hesitation and plan your upcoming vacation in Bermuda, you’ll rest in heaven and come back a different person!
