Alternatively known as ‘Hawaii of Korea,’ Jejy is an oval-shaped volcanic landmass off the southern tip of the Korean Peninsula that appeals romantics and adventure lovers with its miraculous beauty, great outdoors and the wealth of accommodation options to suit all budgets. Volcanic in origin, the island is dominated by Mt. Halla and is characterized by cascading waterfalls, lava formations, citrus groves and warm tropical water. Though still undiscovered by Western travelers, the island is hugely popular among domestic tourists and is a dreamscape destination for Korean newlyweds.
One of the highlights of the Island is its whimsical themed attractions, which range from Jeju Loveland, a sex-themed garden with amazing statues and phallic sculptures, to the Teddy Bear Museum, where visitors will find exhibits of the world-famous stuffed animals. Another highlight you do not want to miss out is the majestic Cheonjaeyeon Waterfall, a breathtaking sight bathed in fantastic lore. According to a legend, seven nymphs descended from heaven at midnight to bathe in the fall’s pool. The forest surrounding the fall is an ideal place to walk and enjoy nature at its best, along with crossing the arched bridge, featuring the carvings of the seven nymphs.
The Island also draws visitors with its annual fire festival, called Jeongwol Daeboreum Fire Festival, celebrated on the first full moon of the Korean lunar calendar (February, different dates), which is a ceremony dedicated to health and a good harvest in the coming year. During the festival visitors will see various cultural shows, traditional events and amazing shooting fireworks which are held in the evening.
Active Pursuits
Surfing – The Island has four surfable areas: The Point, a stony point break with left and right wrapping around and no sand bottom; The Left, at the beach access; The Center Peak, which can get very hollow and sucky when it hits the sand bar; and The Outside, ideal for both novice and advanced surfers.
Cycling – Biking is another activity that is highly popular on the Island. It’s one of the best ways to experience Jeju’s natural wonders and places of interest. There is no shortage of biking trails, plus rentals are easy to find at guesthousesand local shops.
Hiking – Jeju Island is eco-friendly and hiking here is simply adorable. There is a wide range of hiking trails on the island, most going through areas recently designated by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve. There are several trails leading up to the slopes and summit of the majestic Halla Mountain, the highest peak in Korea. All hiking trails are easily accessible, also accessed by bike or taxi from Jeju City and most often pass through multiple ecosystems. Costal trails are also very popular among hikers, giving them a great chance to find numerous lava stone forms, along with exploring a variety of coastal micro organisms. With more than 365 unforgettable craters and amazing nature, it’s no wonder why hiking is an excellent way to explore the island and enjoy fantastic views.
Climate and Weather
The island experiences coastal climate with minimum temperatures above 0 even during the winter months. Summers usually hot with the highest temperature reaching 33°C, autumns are warm and dry, winters are short and wild and springs are warm and pleasant. According to several guide books for South Korea, the best months to travel to Jeju Island are mid-April through June, when cherry blossoms spread with their magical beauty, and September through October, when there is a wonderful display of foliage.
