A visit to a certain country is never complete if you don’t get to know the local people. Visitors of Lisbon are more than lucky as there are so many festivals in the Portuguese capital that want it or not, they will get a chance to get acquainted with the people of Lisbon, their culture and traditions.
Festival of Santo Antonio
June is one of the most loved months in Lisbon as June 13th is the day when there is cheerful and bouncing atmosphere everywhere. Santo Antonio (Saint Anthony) is the patron saint of Lisbon and is known in many countries as the keeper of lost things. But the saint has a different “mission” in Portugal and Brazil. He is known as the saint of marriage.
The festival has been celebrated in Lisbon since the 1950s. Those couples who get married on the mentioned day are believed to receive the saint’s blessing. Santo Casamenteiro (Saint Marriage) – this is how the ceremony is called. It is held at the Se Cathedral, where the Patron Saint is buried.
The festival is not only for those who have already found their sweethearts but also for those who are looking for their sweet love. And irrespective of the goal every person has on this day, they all come together for a huge party that involves entire Lisbon. People celebrate the festival with lots of music, dancing, food and drinks. It’s a great opportunity to try some of the delicious Portuguese foods tourists just have to try in Portugal.
Natal
Natal is another festival/holiday that brings people together. It’s beyond impressive to see the shops full with the Portuguese sweets and cakes, among them the popular Portuguese fruit cake. Walking along Lisbon streets and entering the myriad of pastry shops is one thing every Lisbon tourist should do. This festivity starts in November and lasts until the first week of January.
Lisbon Restaurant Week
Lisbon Restaurant Week is one thing not to miss ever. It’s a short period when the luxurious and best restaurants in Lisbon crate three course menus. Drinks are usually not included. And the meals are being made available at 20 Euros.
You might think “What if I don’t like the offered options?” Well, this is a point that is considered by the restaurants, and therefore, they usually offer two choices for each dish. The restaurant week is held twice a year – in fall and spring.
This is a great option for low budget travelers to fully eat out in the prestigious Lisbon restaurants.
