The oldest women’s prison in Northern Ireland, Armagh Jail in the city of Armagh, which over its 230 years of history saw many executions, will become a 4-star hotel. For the complete reconstruction and rebuilding of the historic building several million pounds will be spent.
Former Armagh guests did not even dream of the comfort, that would surround its future occupants, writes the “Independent”. The building, with a picturesque alley leading to it, was built by the Irish architect Francis Cooley. Armagh Jail has ceased to exist as a correctional institution in 1986.
