Israel is a country of contrasts, at least in regard to the national cuisine. There is not a separate cuisine as there should not, but there is a strange mixture of different national dishes. Once caught in a country along with visitors from different countries are now called to be Israelis, and these dishes have already moved into the category of habitual Israeli cuisine. Nevertheless, they have partially turned into something like that. My friend who lives in Israel, told me that once she and friends had a task: to divide into groups and take a walk in a certain areas in Jerusalem, to get as many different recipes for local food as possible. And this in only one region!Needless to say, that they had accumulated a very, very list of those. And yet there is this hot, multi-ethnic country dish that’s worth a try to each visitor. And it can be done without going to the pathetic restaurant. The majority of Israelis are fed this way.
Hummus
Here, for example, hummus. Amazing appetizer from the mashed chickpeas. Usually served as a separate dish – a plate with olive oil and various spices – it can be paprika, pepper, and sometimes even without any additions, and so tasty, with pitami (pita – Israeli cake). You take a piece of pita in hand, “wipe” with hummus plates and eat it together. In Hebrew there is a saying: “les nagev Hummus” – “wipe hummus”. Hummus is very good when it comes with shawarma or falafel. And in general, just bread with hummus – it’s very nutritious, especially when there is nothing else. The irony is that the best Hummus is usually served in the Arab eateries. Politically motivated, I think, no need to explain.
Falafel
Over the next food – falafel, fried balls from the same chicken, led to a state of mashed potatoes – also came here thank the Arabs. Falafel, along with Israeli shawarma is considered to be junk food, only the first prefer vegetarians, and the second – all the rest.Falafel is usually served in pita bread, apart from the falafel, stuffed with a variety of salads, hummus in the same way, too. Shaurma may be in pita bread, baguette or Lafe (Arabic Flatbread), again, with salads, chips and all that your heart desires. A definite plus – you can buy and eat on the run, like a hot dog. Delicious, nourishing.
Incidentally, there is another option: Just eaten pita bread stuffed with salad – vegetables, cabbage and other things. Here and there in Israel caught stalls, which locals call “dodot” (“aunt”), where the women of retirement age serve starved soldiers – they are now preparing pita with salad, tea and coffee. Absolutely free. Soldiers. The others can also be served – you only have to pay a small coin. Generally, there is a pita or a baguette with a salad or the same shawarma, in fact, terribly uncomfortable – it is large, falls apart, falls out … Only the greedy Israelis can invent to such dishes – as saying the Israelis themselves. But tasty, damn it!
Salads
Lovers of salads, not crammed into pita, and served separately, also have a place to roam. Lettuce, which is called to be Israeli, in fact – the usual mixture of tomatoes and cucumbers with salt and lemon juice. For fans of sharp little is matbucha – a salad of garlic, tomatoes, peppers, sprinkled with oil and sprinkled with spices from the heart.
Sabbath Meal
If, however, go to main courses, surely worth a try Khamin – a marvelous mixture of potatoes, beef bones, onions, beans, grains of hummus and all sorts of condiments. This is a traditional Jewish Sabbath meal, which is being prepared on the night from Friday to Saturday, and then on Saturdays to kindle a fire – that’s been languishing in a saucepan Khamin for eight hours. Of course, we can not ignore, and couscous. It is made from fine semolina and very popular in North Africa, Lebanon and Israel. By itself, it is dry, crumbly and has no particular distinct flavor, but it is always served soup – they need to pour the couscous, so it is slightly swollen. Then it is tasty and nutritious.
You’re a fan of scrambled eggs? Then you definitely need to try a dish called shakshuka – scrambled eggs with herbs and vegetables. There are many different recipes for this dish. For the great cookbook idea when cooking shakshuki yolk should remain whole, but the witnesses testify that it is never so. However, the integrity of the yolk is the case! Looks shakshuka may not be too appetizing, but if properly prepared, it is simply delicious.
For breakfast you can have dzhanhun – such utter sausage puff pastry, which protomilas in a saucepan eight to ten hours. This is a very tight course, by tradition, it is eaten with tomato sauce and boiled eggs, but since he dzhanhun turns sweet, you can eat it with sour cream. Close relative dzhanhuna – malauah, cakes, or rather, pancakes puff pastry that is fried in a pan. What is its charm, so it is that the taste of it in itself neutral, and it can be eaten with anything. For example, sour cream, sugar, cumin, tomato paste .
Al ha-esh– a dish along with hummus, which should definitely try in Israel. In fact, it’s just meat cooked on the grill, but in Israel it is very common. You can not go for it on the skewers out of town, just go to the park or on the lawn outside the house. Israeli residents are very fond of this entertainment, however, who does not love him, especially because the result is usually very tasty!
Generally, in Israel, to eat hearty and tasty is not a problem. Particularly satisfying. Most dishes here are designed for people who do not think about such trifles as excess weight or heaviness in the stomach. On the other hand they eat heartily. What else should the tourists do for the speed mastering the Holy Land! Ate some burekas (in fact, it’s the same Uzbek samsa, but not with meat, but with different fillings, such as potatoes, mushrooms, cheese) – and can climb to the temple of the Holy Sepulchre.
Thank you to the author for correctly admitting that hummus, falafel and shawerma (not to mention kabobs) are in fact Arab food that was stolen by the Israelis.
