The ares covers around 10 acres and was established between 1858 to 1873. It used to be the best botanical garden of Southern Europe. Presently it comes with the largest collections of subtropical vegetation in Europe.

The most popular inhabitants of the Botanical Garden of Lisbon are the outstanding palms, which stand like the owners of the territory.
