The Tagus is usually not mentioned as a Lisbon attraction, but there is hardly any Lisbon tourist who has missed the sight of the river and its nearby attractions. The Tagus River is a 1038 kilometer long river which flows through two countries – Spain and Portugal. Several hundred years ago the Tagus, which is the longest river in the Iberian Peninsula, bore strategic significance for both countries. Presently, the river still bears importance with its natural resources but it has also turned into a major site for many people, be they people of Lisbon or ordinary tourists.
Lisbon would probably not be this interesting and impressive without the Tagus, across which the spectacular Vasco Da Gama Bridge stretches, which is the longest bridge in all Europe. On the whole the entire Lisbon area around the river, especially close to the bridge is a wonderful place for walking and running, expressing love and writing poems, listening to music and simply thinking. Whatever the goal is, it is sure to be fulfilled.
One of the nicest things to do is to see the incredible sunset and sunrise on the river. While watching these spectacular natural processes is not that common for rivers, you will be simply impressed as the river is so wide that it resembles a sea, so the experience will be truly memorable. This said, the truth is that not every person will make themselves wake up so early as to be able to watch the sunrise, of course, if you are not an early bird.
The sunrise is quite “affordable” for people staying at Hotel do Chiado, which provides not only comfort but also nicest views. So if staying close to the river is a priority for you, you already know where to stay in Lisbon. In line with this, you can plan your travel in Lisbon so as to appear near the river a few minutes before the sunset. If you are a photographer or love taking pictures, then take Tagus, add the bridge, add the sunset and add your good spirits and you will have a great recipe for a brilliant picture.
If you feel hungry or would just love to eat out somewhere with a fantastic view to the river, then you might want to visit Atira-Te Ao Rio. The restaurant is a great place to get to know Portuguese cuisine; make sure to order one of the top 10 Portuguese foods. Everything seems to be great in the restaurant – the location, the food, the design but sometimes the service is quite poor and can annoy visitors, especially the demanding ones.
