You have already picked Lisbon as your upcoming destination. And it doesn’t matter how you did it, you made the right choice. Now, before getting all excited about the trip or enjoying Fado in Alfama, you need to decide where to stay in Lisbon. The choice is especially tough when you can’t afford the most luxurious hotels and vacation packages. Here are three areas of Lisbon where you can find an appropriate apartment.
Chiado
Chiado is a square the area around which is also called Chiado. It has a central location and includes many museums and cultural centers.
One of the reasons why you would not want to find an apartment in Chiado is the memory of the horrible disaster that took place here in 1988. The Chiado fire took the homes of many and the lives of two. However, due to later reconstructions and renovation of the buildings, the exteriors and interiors are all new.
Restaurants, wine bars, in a word, places where you can relax with friends and find new ones.
Baixa
Baixa is the place if you are a shopper at heart. Don’t even think of other places, it’s filled with shopping boutiques and shops, there are a few pedestrian streets only in this neighborhood, and lots of people sharing your interest. Yes, ladies, get ready for the best old and new brands of Europe, all you need is a little fun and fashion. Only don’t forget about the smart shopping tips.
The area is not limited to shopping, there are many attractive cafes and bars, in general, a lot of people. This means that you probably can’t manage to have romantic secluded walks in the evenings. There will always be someone watching you.
This neighborhood is for travelers that need energy, lights, noise and whatever the capital can give you.
Alfama
I will repeat more and more. If I had to choose accommodation in Lisbon every year, I would pick Alfama over and over again. The reason is not its location or the number of attractions in it. Every city has a historic neighborhood that surrounds you with specific atmosphere. When it does, you need no museums or galleries to feel a part of that city.
Alfama is the best jewel of the city. It displays unique architecture with narrow and colorful streets, cute houses, and so on. The only drawback is the fact that you’ll have to literally climb the district. Those who like walking might consider taking the tram from time to time. Those who don’t should consider the other two areas. Alfama is for curious adventurers and explorers. If you don’t plan to check out the local bars and flow into the Portuguese culture, what else are you looking for in Lisbon?
All of the mentioned neighborhoods are close to the downtown and therefore to key attractions. This makes them very popular and convenient for tourists. The locals are always mixed with guests, the old generation with the young. It proves that Lisbon is not one of the cities meant for retiring. It’s the best Portuguese cocktail able to bring out the best in you.
