Pamplemousses Gardens
Found in the North West of the island, Pamplemousses Gardens (officially known as Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens) is one of the most representative icons of Mauritius, boasting a wide selection of unique and beautiful tropical plants (around 500 species), thriving in the garden’s fascinating ponds. Established by French governor around 300 hundred years ago, the garden has much to offer its visitors: Victoria Amazonica water lilies, a lotus pond of flowers, enormous bamboo trees, the replica old sugar mill, the great lake — Grand Bassin featuring plenty of fish, and the colonial Creole-style house ‘Chateau de mon plaisir,’ where you can see occasional exhibitions. There are also a few monuments around the garden that bear the names of the people that have ever contributed to the history of the island. Pamplemousses gardens are open seven days a week, from 8:00am till 5:30pm.
Chamarel
Visiting Mauritius? Take time to explore the beautiful village of Chamarel in the southwestern part of the island and its three natural wonders – the spectacular Chamarel Falls, the natural phenomenon of unusual Colored Earths, created by volcanic rocks and the wonderful Chamarel Adventure Park, extended over an area of 12 hectares. A good idea for a family daytrip, this idyllic place is perfect for hikers, and for those who enjoy active and adventurous vacations. Casela Nature & Leisure Park – walk with lions!
This is another must see attraction in Mauritius really worth a visit. Found in the western part of the island between Flic en Flac and Tamarin, this stunning, beautifully landscaped park (with a total area of 14 hectares) is set up with a diverse variety of exotic plants and flowers. The park offers unique wildlife experiences, including feeding baby deers, wallabies, ducks and other small animals, walking with the lions (£20 per person), or else interacting with cheetahs and white kangaroos. There are also giant Tortoises that seem very friendly to people, as well as tenth of hundreds of exotic birds, wild peacocks and safari animals. The Park also features an on-top-of-the-hill restaurant, which is a somewhat difficult climb for those with health problems, but once there you are sure to enjoy its mouth-watering menu, add to this the amazing views sure to delight.
