Playa del Duque
Due to its volcanic origin, many of Tenerife’s beaches are made of black sand and up until the 1990s this was true of the Playa del Duque as well. However, in an effort to increase its reputation and draw more tourist, white sand was pumped up from the seabed and layered on top of the original volcanic surface. Though much of the sand has now washed away, the beach is still popular with families thanks to the calm protected waters and local amenities.
Playa de La Arena
Unlike Playa del Duque, the Playa de La Arena beach still retains its original black, volcanic sand. Making for a dramatic setting, this beach gets a huge amount of sunshine so bathers can spend long hot days relaxing on the dark surface. The beach is served by a range of bars and restaurants too, making it an ideal spot to catch up on some much needed ‘r and r’.
El Médano
Stretching for 2 kilometres, El Medano beach is the longest on the island. Made up of fine, golden sand, the area surrounding the beach is protected as a nature reserve and well worth exploring during your day on the beach.
Thanks to its size, this is a great spot to find your own little piece of Tenerife and spend a day in an idyllic location.
Playa de Las Teresitas
In the 1970s, residents of the island’s capital Santa Cruz decided that they wanted a beach of their very own and so set about importing bucket loads of sand from the Sahara Desert.
The end result was Las Teresitas. Protected by a man-made reef, the warm, calm waters are ideal for families and the wealth of amenities makes it more than sutiable for holidaymakers of all ages.
