There was one torture back in school (no, actually there were a few tortures, but this one is related to our topic), and the name of it was SCIENCE! Natural sciences, in particular, were so complicated that my brain would display “Loading . . .” in front of my eyes. I then thought that there can be no way for science to be presented in a truly interesting way. There is one place in Lisbon that changed this perception of mine for good.
The Portuguese call that place Pavilhao do Conhecimento or Science Museum in English. It was opened in 1999 with the main purpose of adding up more enthusiasm for science among citizens. It has apparently fulfilled its purpose of existence, moreover, it started to attract foreign citizens as well.
Despite the name, the museum concentrates not only on science, but technology as well. Perhaps it would be more correct to say that the museum mixes the science and technological advances. You get to learn about the exhibitions in an interactive manner. The interactiveness is mainly expressed through games and experiments, which can be done by you. A perfect way to feel yourself an Einstein. The museum even offers laboratories, both online and real, where you can conduct cool lab tests. Don’t forget to take pictures during the process.
If there is a temporary exhibition at the time of your visit, make sure not to miss it. Major world companies that function in the given sphere either support or organize exclusive exhibits.
It doesn’t matter if you’re a pro or a beginner, the information will be very interesting and helpful. Your age and interests don’t matter too. Your kids (if you have any) will love the museum and it might also be one of their first inspirations. This is one of the few Lisbon attractions that will catch the attention of all age groups. Moreover, this site is in the list of our most worthy places.
The museum is open all week except Mondays. The working hours are from 10 am to 6 pm on weekdays and from 11 am to 7 pm on Saturday and Sunday. As every single item on display is worth a stare and, maybe, a try, plan no less than 3 hours for Pavilhao do Conhecimento. If your kids are extraordinarily curious, you can easily spend more time there. The ticket costs €7 for adults, €3 for kids, and, plus, you get a discount for a family visit.
Some visitors suggest planning the museum trip right after the Oceanarium, it would be a day full of discoveries (just in Lisbon style) and knowledge. After the encounter with the most dangerous residents of the sea, you can enjoy your time at the big playground called Science Museum.
The museum is as interesting and fun as any other famous attraction. The money and the time you’ll spend on this site are completely worth it. You will not only learn new things but also prolong your life for a few minutes; you will hardly escape the fun and laughter. And most importantly, it doesn’t matter if you failed the science class years ago, everyone is a straight A-student here.
