Whether it’s a road trip or an air travel – a fun, stress-free family vacation starts with proper planning and preparation. Unless they are mature enough to pack their own stuff (or unless your hubby is kind enough to do it for you), you’re probably alone in this task. Ugh… mommy problems.
Ensuring that your kids travel with comfort is your top-priority. And yes, every mom out there will agree – packing is stressful!
Well, not much if you have a checklist like this.
From baby essentials to healthy snacks, toys and activity books – here are 15 travel essentials if you’re bringing your kids with you. Be sure you don’t miss a thing!
1. Travel Wipes
Topping the list are travel wipes. Don’t underestimate what disinfecting wipes can do. From sanitizing car and airplane seats to removing stains and sanitizing their gadgets and toys, travel wipes are a must-have! Be sure to have plenty in your bag and in your luggage (as a reserve).
2. Hygiene Kits and Toiletries
Allocate one toiletry kit for each of your kid. You don’t want them fighting over it! Make sure it has the following: toothbrush and toothpaste, soap, wet wipes, mini comb, sunscreen, and hair accessories (hair bands or ponytails for the girls).
3. Appropriate Clothing
Yep – you read it right. Don’t just bring clothes. Bring appropriate clothes. Of course, it’ll depend on where you’re going. You don’t want to overstuff on coats and sweaters if you’re headed to the beach or a sunny country, right?
4. Shoes/Sandals
One pair of shoes per kid is enough (unless you do a lot of walking, an extra pair of comfortable sneaker is ideal), along with one pair of socks per day.
5. Toys and Activity Books/Crafts
Toys can be a life-saver, saving you from the stress of bored and grumpy children. Make sure each of your kids do have their own toys. It’s better if they will have their own mini backpack which contains their toys, toiletries, snacks and other personal items. Instead of iPads, consider giving them something that’s more educational and stimulating like activity books and toys (Rubik’s cube perhaps?). These will surely keep them engaged.
6. Medications
Very important to bring are paracetamol (you never know), motion sickness pills, analgesics (pain relievers), antihistamine, and of course, their vitamins. Be sure to bring a thermometer for kids. This is critical.
7. Snacks… and more snacks
Don’t make them “hangry”. Food can be prepared ahead and stored in airtight containers or zip lock bags. If you have a picky eater or a kid who has some form of food intolerance, preparing their snacks is super helpful. Pack some fruits, veggies and nuts for a healthy travel. Of course, some sweet treats are totally okay (your kids will agree!).
8. Paper Bags/Garbage Bags
Traveling with kids can get messy so be sure you have extra paper/plastic bags. Hold your kids accountable for their trash by giving them their own garbage bag. It’s a skill they have to learn.
9. Emergency Kit (bandages, alcohol, gauze)
It’s not that you’re being paranoid or anticipating a mishap or what – it pays to be prepared. Do have an emergency kit containing everything you might need – band aids, alcohol, gauze, wound disinfectant, etc. Check out a more comprehensive list here.
10. Nappies and Baby Stuff
If you have a toddler, make sure he has her own stuff too! Bring diapers (as many as you would need). Of course, don’t forget his feeding bottles and formula, pacifier, toys, mattress, clothes, and a few more clothes. You know… babies!
11. Travel Stroller
For much mobility and enjoyment, you definitely would want to bring a portable/travel stroller for your toddler. Such a relief!
12. Pillows and Blankets
Keep them warm and comfortable by bringing some pillows and blankets, especially if you’re having a long ride (or flight). For sure, just like you, your kids love to snuggle while in the car too.
13. Sun and Skin Protection
Mosquito and insect-bites are a common cause of travel-related health problems. So be sure you’ve got a good insect repellent/lotion for you and your kids. Don’t forget their sun block, sun glasses and sun hats too.
14. Zip lock bags
Well, they always come in handy at some point!
15. Entertainment
You definitely need this. Consider bringing CDs, videos, paperback books, games, etc.
16. Know local regulations, customs and laws.
You are in a foreign country. Know the rules and regulations as well as customs. Your first job before heading to a country is to a) know what political and criminal situation is in that country b) how you should approach law enforcement representatives c) what you can carry with you.
There you go – your smart checklist for a super fun and hassle-free travel with kids. Make sure to double check if you have all these items ready. Happy packing!
