Dubai is famed for its constant architectural evolution, its souks and marketplaces where gold jewellery and traditional goods can be found at bargain prices.Dubai is also the place for outrageously luxurious hotels.
However, perhaps one of the most impressive aspects of Dubai is its architecture; where most cities have just one or two truly spectacular buildings, Dubai has dozens. Here, we take a look at just ten of this city’s most amazing architectural feats.
Burj Al Arab
The building called Burj Al Arab is a five star hotel in the city which was built by Said Khalil and is managed by the well known Jumeirah Group. Its designer is Tom Wright. At just over one thousand feet, it is one of the tallest hotel buildings in the world.
Burj Dubai
This is an incredibly tall skyscraper in Dubai and is officially the tallest man-made structure in the world. It was built by the south Korean corporation Samsung, along with the United Arab Emirates company called Arabtec and a Belgian company called Besix. It was designed by an architect by the name of Adrian Smith, from the US.
The Palm Islands
This is an artificial archipelago that was constructed by using land reclamation. The company behind the building project is Nakheel, an organisation that is partly owned by the Dubai government.
There are three islands in total here; Palm Deira, Palm Jebel Ali and Palm Jumeirah and they are located along the coastal area of Jumeirah.
Dubai Marina
This is another architectural triumph; this is located between the Dubai Media city and Jebel Ali Port and is entirely man made.
Here you can find more than two hundred skyscrapers, including the Marina Terrace, the Princess Tower, the Infinity Tower and the Marina Towers. The area itself spans an incredible fifty million feet.
The Rose Tower
This is a 1,100 feet skyscraper with 72 storeys, situated on Sheikh Zayed road. Construction of this building began eight years ago; the original plans were to make it two hundred feet taller, however this height was later reduced as the result of modifications to the design. The Rose Tower has the honour of being the world’s tallest hotel.
The Emirates Office Tower
A building which is frequently referred to as Tower One, this is a fifty four story office structure, located on the same road as the Rose Tower hotel.
It is also connected to the Jumeirah Emirates Hotel via a retail boulevard and its total height is just over 354 metres.
The 21st Century Tower
This is another architectural wonder located on Sheikh Zayed road. Standing at 883 feet tall, it is the third tallest residential structure in the world and is occupied by many of the Emirates Airline cabin crew members.
The Al Fattan Tower
This building stretches up fifty one floors and is used for residential purposes. It is located within the Dubai Marian and is right next to the famous Oasis Beach Tower. Its total height is 755 feet, which makes it the city’s seventh tallest building.
Park Place
Park Place was designed by a group of international architects and is sixty stores high.
It features heat refraction technology, which has never been used in the Middle East before; this ensures that the building remains cool, even when the strong Arab sun is at its hottest.
Grosvenor House West Marina Beach
Grosvenor House West Marina Beach was one of the Dubai Marina’s first completed and functional buildings. It houses twelve bars and restaurants, located on the 44th floor and is one of the most popular hotels in the city.
