100,000 international students from over 200 different countries come to study in London every year, that’s more than in any other city in the world. And it is no coincidence. London attracts students looking to study a variety of courses from semesters abroad to full-time undergraduate degrees. One popular option is to learn English. Here are some of the reasons why…
The Birthplace of the English Language
It seems like a no brainer, where better to learn English than where the English language first began. It has adapted and developed since its creation in 450 AD, when Germanic tribes invaded Britain and Old English was created. Since, it has evolved and changed and by 1500 so-called Early Modern English emerged as printing brought standardization and the dialect of London, where most publishing houses were, became the standard. English as it is spoken today stems from 1800 as the industrial revolution and technological development created the need for new vocabulary. In London students can learn the original English language.
A Multicultural City
London is said to be “the world in one city” due to its large multicultural society where 200 languages are spoken on its streets. Therefore, everyone is able to feel at home. People from many English speaking countries as well as people from all around the UK live in London and therefore the learner will be able to listen to many different accents and improve their skills. Lastly, the amount of international students living in London means that learners will be able to build a global network of friends and contacts, beneficial for future travel and work.
Recognised Schools
London qualifications are recognised and valued by employers all over the world, standing all those who study in London in good stead. The English Studio, an English language school in London, is one of the language schools accredited by the British Council and ISI (a body put together by the Home Office to inspect private teaching institutions in London) which guarantee the highest standards.
London´s Social Life
Most universities and language schools provide support services and, especially language schools, organize social events so their students get to have fun, meet new people and, most importantly, practice their English language skills in a relaxed environment. London is a thriving city where there literally is something for everyone. From great nightlife such as the world famous West End theatre, bustling night clubs, a total of more than 6000 restaurants and loads of traditional English pubs. There are also many busy shopping areas, lots of peaceful parks, great scenery and architecture and, of course, the classic tourist attractions. All of which ensure that students will never be short of things to do.
