Lisbon is the westernmost capital of Western Europe, and as such, it is a highly interesting destination for travelers. Nevertheless, with such other European capitals as Paris, Madrid and Berlin, the Portuguese capital is being kind of overshadowed and underrated. But Lisbon is worth visiting, and here is why.
Historical value – Lisbon is one of the most historical cities in the world. Visitors can get acquainted with the city’s history through its amazing architecture. Every stone has something to recount about the city’s outstanding history which goes back to 300,000 years ago.
Travel-to/in-Lisbon expenses – It’s an open secret that not many people can afford the best because of lack of money. Lisbon as a whole is like a most beautiful bunch of flowers coming at a surprisingly low price. Perhaps that is the reason why people don’t venture it, because it’s usually quite unbelievable to have a good thing at a low price. Being the cheapest Western European capital, Lisbon will break your perception of quality and its price as soon as you visit it.
Sunny days – Due to its Mediterranean climate the Portuguese capital has the sun shining in its sky for most of the days. While most people opt for visiting the city in summer it has a reason other than the climate (visitors prefer summer to other seasons as the majority of crazy festivals take place in that period). The seasons are quite distinct in Lisbon but they are never unbearably cold. So Lisbon is a number one destination for people who love warm weather, the sparkling sun and the blue of the sky.
People – Portuguese people are very friendly and helping. If you have been to Berlin and Paris, you will momentarily feel the difference. The warm attitude and the warm welcome you will receive from people in Lisbon will pleasantly affect and accompany you during your travel in Lisbon.
Cuisine – Portuguese cuisine, just like the Spanish one, is greatly defined by the sea and is served everywhere in Lisbon. Notably, a great number of pastries typical of Portuguese cuisine were created in the 18th century. The “inventors” were the nuns of the mentioned period whose main goal was to supplement their incomes. Interestingly, they come with rather weird names such as “barriga de freira,” which means the nun’s belly.
Some of the foods to try in Lisbon are sweet bread, pastries de nata, sardines, caldeirada and so on.
Things to See – There are lots of things to see and do in Lisbon. But Lisbon is not a huge city, and it will give you an opportunity not only to get to know Lisbon attractions but also visit nearby places too. Among those not-to-miss out-of-Lisbon places are the Sintra palaces. Make sure to see the charming beauty of these historical places.
